The Split Barrel Sampler is a general all purpose sampling device designed to be driven into the material to be sampled. The energy required to advance the sampler is recorded and used in determining the bearing capacity of the material (Standard Penetration Test).

The split barrel can be opened to make a visual inspection of the soil sample as it was insitu or for general classification.

The sampler can be used with or without basket type retainer. When sampling non-cohesive soils a retainer is generally necessary.

Liners for the split section can be furnished as optional accessories. The use of a the need to transfer a part of the soil sample to a separate container for shipment to the laboratory. The liner is always sealed and capped , which preserves the moisture content of the soil and prevents disturbance of the sample due to consolidation. Liners are recommended for use only in sampling plastic soils.

Sample shoes are available with either a sharp or blunt cutting edge. The sharp edge shoe (DCDMA Standard) is always furnished unless the blunt shoe is specified.
